Put on a modern virtual-reality headset and the effect can still feel
like a small act of magic.
Your living room disappears. A cinema screen stretches across the
wall. A boxing coach appears in front of you. Your laptop window becomes
the size of a billboard, while two more screens float beside it. Look at
a menu, pinch your fingers and it opens.
You can buy this technology today. Yet most people still reach for a
phone, television or games console instead. VR has become far better
than its reputation—but it has not become a normal household device.
So what do today’s headsets genuinely offer, and are any of them
worth buying in 2026?
VR, mixed reality and XR: what is the difference?
Virtual reality, or VR, replaces the room around you
with a digital world. Mixed reality uses cameras to
show your real surroundings while placing digital screens, games or
objects inside them. Google likewise uses XR, or extended
reality, as the umbrella term covering VR, augmented reality
and mixed reality. Android XR

Apple prefers “spatial computing.” The name is different, but the
basic idea is similar: apps and entertainment no longer have to live
inside a rectangular screen.
What can a headset actually do?
Gaming remains VR’s clearest success. Swinging a lightsaber, aiming a
bow or returning a table-tennis serve feels very different from pressing
buttons on a controller. Fitness apps can also turn exercise into a
game.
Entertainment is the easiest non-gaming use to understand. A headset
can create a huge private screen in a small room or, on supported
devices using travel mode, on a flight. One person can watch something
at cinema scale without owning a projector or a giant television.
Virtual monitors are useful for privacy and limited desk space,
although typing, checking a phone and talking to colleagues can feel
awkward when your eyes are covered. A headset can replace several
monitors; comfort is what decides whether you will actually use it for
work.
The newest idea is an AI assistant that can see what the wearer sees.
On Samsung’s Galaxy XR, Gemini can answer questions about a video, a
place in Google Maps or an object in the room. Google
shows how Gemini and Android apps work inside Galaxy XR. Apple’s
visionOS 27 similarly adds Visual Intelligence so users can ask Siri
about something simply by looking at it. Apple describes the feature

Meta Quest: the one for most curious beginners
Meta’s Quest range is the closest VR has come to a mainstream games
console. It works without a PC, includes hand controllers and has a
large catalogue of games and apps.
In Australia, Meta currently lists the 128GB Quest 3S at
AU$569, the 256GB version at AU$729,
and the sharper Quest 3 with 512GB at AU$969. Both run
the same current-generation software. The difference most people notice
is visual comfort: Quest 3 has clearer pancake lenses, a wider view and
more storage. Meta
lists the prices and specifications, while The
Verge’s independent review found the cheaper 3S a strong first headset
but said its lenses and display were not as good as Quest 3’s.
For games, exercise and an affordable first taste of mixed reality,
Quest 3S is the obvious starting point. Quest 3 makes more sense if you
expect to use it often and value a clearer image. Meta rates battery
life at about 2.5 hours for Quest 3S and 2.2 hours for Quest 3—enough
for a film or a gaming session, not an all-day computer.
Apple Vision Pro: the most polished—and hardest to justify
Apple’s Vision Pro is less like a console and more like a luxury
demonstration of where personal computing could go. The M5 version uses
eye tracking, hand gestures and voice for navigation, makes text and
video unusually sharp and can turn a Mac into a large virtual
workspace.
Apple introduced the M5 model in Australia at
AU$5,999, roughly ten times the price of the entry
Quest 3S. Apple’s
Australian announcement lists its launch price and battery claims.
That makes it plausible for some filmmakers, designers, developers and
committed Apple enthusiasts—but difficult to defend as a family’s
weekend gaming machine.
There are physical compromises too. Apple lists the
headset at 750–800 grams and its separate battery at 353 grams.
Apple claims up to 2.5 hours of general use or three hours of video.
Vision Pro proves that virtual screens can look beautiful and feel
natural; it does not prove that most people will pay that much to wear
them.
Samsung Galaxy XR: Android puts Gemini on your face
Samsung’s Galaxy XR sits between Meta and Apple. It launched in the
United States at US$1,799 and went
on sale in the United Kingdom on 10 July 2026. Availability still
varies by market.
Its most interesting feature is Android XR. Familiar Google apps can
occupy the space around the wearer, while Gemini can discuss what
appears on screen or in the room. You can explore a city in Google Maps,
ask about a landmark or arrange several apps around a desk.
Samsung lists a 545-gram headset plus a separate 302-gram battery,
with up to two hours of general use or 2.5 hours of video. It is lighter
on the face than Vision Pro but remains visibly and physically a
headset. Optional controllers and prescription inserts can add to the
cost.
Why VR still lives in the cupboard
The biggest problem is no longer image quality. It is friction.
A phone is already in your pocket, wakes instantly and can be handed
to someone else. A headset must fit your face, may need prescription
inserts, isolates you from people nearby and usually lasts only a few
hours on battery. Sharing can require adjustments, cleaning and separate
profiles. Newer headsets and comfort settings may reduce motion sickness
for some people, but it has not disappeared.
Market estimates reflect that hesitation. Counterpoint Research
estimated that global VR-headset shipments fell 17% year over
year in the first quarter of 2026, while shipments of lighter
AR smart glasses rose 136%. The contrast suggests
momentum is shifting toward lighter eyewear, although shipment data do
not measure active use or consumer satisfaction. Counterpoint
published the estimates on 4 June 2026.
Whatever you buy, follow the maker’s age guidance, set a clear play
boundary, take breaks and stop if you feel dizzy or nauseated. Never use
a headset while driving or doing anything that requires attention to the
real world.
So, should you buy one?
Buy a Quest 3S if you want an affordable route into
VR gaming, fitness and giant-screen entertainment. Choose Quest
3 if you expect to use it regularly and care about clearer
lenses.
Consider Galaxy XR if it is sold in your market and
you specifically want Android apps, Gemini and mixed-reality workspaces.
Consider Vision Pro only if its exceptional displays,
Apple integration or professional uses justify its exceptional
price.
Everyone else should try a headset before buying. A 20-minute
demonstration will tell you more about comfort, motion and usefulness
than a page of specifications.
VR is not dead, and it is no longer a gimmick. It is a genuinely
impressive way to play, watch, exercise and experiment with new forms of
computing. But it remains a destination you choose to visit—not yet a
device most people want to wear all day.
The mass-market winner may be the company that remembers one
unglamorous fact: the future has to feel comfortable on your face.
