A robot vacuum can map your rooms, avoid furniture and return to its charger. Then it reaches the stairs—and the futuristic experience suddenly needs a person to pick it up.
Roborock is trying to remove that awkward handover. Its Saros Rover has a pair of articulated wheel-legs that can lift its body and negotiate steps, while also cleaning the staircase. The appeal is instantly understandable. You do not need to know anything about artificial intelligence to recognise the difference between “clean the downstairs” and “clean the house”.
At IFA in Berlin this September, Tom’s Guide reporter Erin Bashford watched Rover climb, clean and descend a demonstration staircase. The round trip took about three minutes. That is a witnessed demonstration—not a long-term test in an ordinary home. Firsthand IFA report
Why wheels suddenly need legs
Rover’s wheels are attached to moving supports rather than fixed directly beneath a flat chassis. Roborock says each side can rise and fall independently, helping the main body stay level over changing surfaces. Motion sensors and three-dimensional information guide those movements. Think of the difference between rolling a suitcase across a floor and lifting it onto the next step. The challenge is no longer just moving forward. It is deciding where support will come from during the move.
For a cleaning robot, getting upstairs is only part of the goal. Roborock says Rover is designed to clean individual stair treads as it travels, including different staircase shapes and carpeted surfaces. A doorstep is not a staircase
This distinction is worth remembering when reading robot-vacuum advertising.
In its 4 September IFA announcement, Roborock says the Saros 20 Flow and Qrevo Edge 3 Pro can cross specified double-layer thresholds up to 8.8 centimetres. One raised transition between rooms is a different problem from a repeated sequence of steps, turns and edges. The useful buying question is not “How high can it lift?” but “Can it complete the route in my home?”

The boring tests will decide whether it succeeds
A staircase demonstration makes a wonderful video. A household appliance needs a less glamorous achievement: repeating the job without becoming another thing to supervise.
Here are the tests we would want to see before judging a retail version:
- Reliability: Can it complete repeated trips, not just one carefully prepared route?
- Cleaning quality: Does it actually collect dirt near stair edges and corners?
- Safe recovery: What happens when it encounters an unexpected object or cannot finish a climb?
- Everyday practicality: How much noise, battery use and maintenance does the extra mechanism add?
- Real cost: Does one stair-capable machine offer better value than simpler alternatives?
These are evaluation questions, not reported Rover failures. They are the difference between being impressed by an invention and knowing whether you want to live with it.
Can you buy Roborock Saros Rover yet?
Do not confuse a trade-show appearance with a retail launch. Bashford’s IFA report says a Roborock representative could not provide a release date; pricing also remained unannounced. The wait is part of the story, not a detail to bury beneath the exciting video. Firsthand IFA report
That uncertainty does not make the idea unimportant. It simply tells us which stage of the story we are watching.
The home robot might not look human
There is something refreshing about a robot designed around one stubborn chore.
It does not need a face, a conversation or a theatrical imitation of a person. It needs to reach the dusty place that yesterday’s machine could not reach.
Our view: this is a useful way to judge home robotics. Ask how much work disappears—not how human the machine looks.
If stair-climbing vacuums eventually become reliable and affordable, the breakthrough will not be that your cleaner has legs. It will be that you stop thinking about which floor it is on.
