Smart Glasses Are Getting Useful. The Person Opposite You Has Questions.

AI glasses promise hands-free photos, translations and quick answers. But their biggest challenge may not be battery life—it may be convincing everyone else that the camera can be trusted.

Imagine asking your glasses to translate a sign, taking a photograph without reaching for your phone, or checking a message with a quick glance.

Now imagine being the person sitting opposite the wearer, wondering whether your conversation is being recorded.

Both reactions can be reasonable. That is what makes smart glasses one of the most interesting—and socially awkward—consumer technologies of 2026.

The hardware is no longer just a futuristic demonstration. Meta sells camera-equipped glasses, and its Meta Ray-Ban Display adds an in-lens screen. The question is moving beyond whether the technology works to whether people feel comfortable around it. Meta’s display-glasses announcement

What smart glasses can do: cameras, audio and displays

The name covers several different experiences.

Camera-and-audio glasses let people capture photographs or video, listen to audio and interact with an assistant without holding a phone. A camera on the frame does not automatically mean there is a screen in the lens.

Display glasses add a small visual interface. Meta describes its display as designed for brief interactions such as messages, translations and photo previews. Full augmented-reality glasses aim for richer digital objects and experiences layered over the world. A product that shows a notification should not automatically be treated as having that whole capability.

That distinction helps cut through the advertising. Before asking which pair is best, ask what you actually want to do—and which features the specific model and region support.

Why people might genuinely want them

The simple case is convenience: hands occupied, phone away, one small task completed.

The more important case is accessibility. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner notes that camera glasses can help people who are blind or have low vision request descriptions of objects, while display-equipped models may offer live speech-to-text. That is a useful corrective to the idea that all camera eyewear is just a novelty. For some users, a hands-free interface is not merely more convenient; it opens up a different way to access information.

But the benefit to the wearer is only half the design problem.

A recording light is not the same as permission

Meta says a white capture light on the front of its glasses signals photos and video being captured for the gallery. Its explanation says second-generation glasses disable the camera when they detect an obstructed light, and that it is improving detection of physical tampering. These are the company’s descriptions of its safeguards, not a guarantee that every bystander will notice a recording or that misuse is impossible. Meta’s privacy Q&A

The distinction is straightforward: an indicator can tell somebody what is happening. It cannot, by itself, tell you they agreed to it.

“Where does the picture go?” is a separate question

Meta says gallery photos and videos are stored on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone. Choosing to share them or use them with Meta AI is a further step. Meta’s privacy Q&A

That means three questions should not be collapsed into one: Was something recorded? Was it sent elsewhere? Was it made public?

A private recording can still make another person uncomfortable. Equally, seeing camera glasses does not establish that their wearer has uploaded anything. Clear explanations are more useful than assuming either perfect safety or constant surveillance.

Australia is already asking harder questions

On 7 August 2026, Attorney-General Michelle Rowland said she had asked the Privacy Commissioner to prioritise the privacy implications of smart glasses, highlighting risks including inappropriate recording and harassment, particularly for women and children. That announcement raised concerns and called for scrutiny; it was not itself an announcement of a blanket sales ban. Australian Government statement

The feature that will not fit on a specification sheet

Our view is that the winning smart glasses will need to pass two tests at once: useful enough for the wearer, understandable enough for everyone around them.

Asking before filming, explaining what a light means and respecting a request to put the camera away are not substitutes for good engineering. They are part of making the technology socially usable.

Smart glasses may remove the need to pull a phone from your pocket. They cannot remove the need to treat the person in front of you as a person—not merely something the camera can capture.
