Lenovo’s Project Swan expands from a 14-inch laptop screen to 17 inches. The concept tackles a familiar problem: carrying less without working in a cramped space.

You open a document. Then a spreadsheet. Then a video call. Within minutes, your laptop feels like a desk covered in papers, with everything you need hiding underneath something else.

You could carry a bigger computer. You could pack another monitor. Lenovo is exploring a third option: a screen that gets wider when you need more room.

Unveiled on 3 September 2026, its Project Swan concept expands from a 14-inch notebook display into a 17-inch, 16:9 screen. The prototype weighs 1.6 kilograms and measures 17.9 millimetres thick. The attraction is immediate. A small laptop for the journey. A wider workspace when you arrive.

A screen that makes room

Think about planning a holiday. You want the hotel, the map and the flight times visible together. Or consider a student taking notes beside a lecture, or someone checking a contract against an earlier version.

These are ordinary tasks that can make a portable screen feel cramped. More processing power does little to help if you keep losing the window you need.

Swan’s proposed answer is a continuous display that expands sideways. The useful change is where information can sit: two documents beside each other, for example, rather than one covering the other. Those are potential uses of the design, not measured productivity gains.

And the benefit would be uneven. Someone working mainly in a single document might barely need it. Someone repeatedly comparing information could use it all day.

How can a screen roll without breaking?

We tend to think of a display as a rigid sheet of glass. Flexible displays are built differently.

Samsung Display’s technical explanation describes how a flexible material called polyimide can replace the rigid substrate beneath a display. Making the structure thin helps reduce the stress as it bends. That allows a panel to roll out to expose more viewing area and roll back when the extra space is unnecessary. The image is therefore not simply being magnified. The idea is to reveal more physical screen.

Turning that possibility into a good laptop requires more than a bendable panel. The mechanism, protective layers and software have to work together so that changing the screen feels routine.

Lenovo has already tried going upwards

This is part of a longer experiment. In January 2025, Lenovo introduced the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, with a display that expanded vertically from 14 inches to 16.7 inches. Lenovo’s CES 2025 announcement

A taller screen lends itself to long pages. Swan’s wider layout makes side-by-side work the more obvious pitch. Neither shape is automatically better; it depends on what someone is trying to see.

Lenovo’s own design team has described testing earlier rollable concepts for details such as window layouts, understandable controls and safe stopping behaviour. The real test comes after the demonstration

An expanding screen is easy to admire for a few minutes. Living with one raises harder questions.

What happens after years of opening, closing, travelling and cleaning? How expensive is a repair? Does the larger display noticeably shorten time away from a charger? Do applications rearrange neatly, or leave the user tidying windows?

Those are questions for a finished product and independent testing. A demonstration cannot settle them, and Swan’s announcement does not supply the long-term ownership evidence.

Price will also matter. Its competition includes the laptop someone already owns, perhaps with an ordinary monitor waiting at home. A rollable machine would need to earn its extra complexity by being useful often enough.
