Imagine stopping on a long drive, plugging in your car, ordering a coffee—and returning to find the battery almost full.
That is the experience BYD is trying to sell. Not just a longer-range electric car, but a shorter interruption to your day.
The company says its second-generation Blade Battery, paired with its FLASH Charging system, can go from 10% to 70% in five minutes, or 10% to 97% in nine minutes. Even with that qualification, it is a striking proposition. The next big electric-car selling point may be less about how far you can travel without stopping—and more about how little a stop matters.
What BYD’s nine-minute charging claim actually means
There are two important details hiding inside the headline.

This is also not a software trick that makes an older EV charge dramatically faster. The battery must be designed to accept energy at that rate, and the charging equipment must be able to supply it.
Think of a large water pipe connected to a narrow bottle opening. Making the pipe bigger does not make the bottle fill at the pipe’s full capacity.
How BYD Flash Charging uses power and battery storage
BYD describes a system capable of delivering a peak of up to 1,500 kilowatts through one connector. A kilowatt measures power: how quickly energy is moving. A kilowatt-hour measures an amount of energy stored or delivered.
That difference is crucial. Peak power is the fastest moment during a charging session, not necessarily the speed maintained throughout it. The number a driver experiences is the time needed to add useful energy.
BYD’s UK technical briefing says its system uses stationary batteries alongside the charger, storing electricity before transferring it rapidly to a car. That does not create free electricity. It shifts when electricity is drawn. A busy site still has to replenish its storage, so a string of cars arriving one after another becomes a different engineering challenge from one impressive demonstration.

Will it work with the car already in your driveway?
Not at the headline speed unless the vehicle supports it.
BYD’s UK briefing says CCS2-compatible cars can use its proposed charging equipment, but other vehicles remain limited by what their own systems can accept. The real test comes after the stopwatch
Here is what would make nine-minute charging genuinely transformative: reliable equipment, enough available bays, transparent prices and batteries that continue performing well after years of use.
A launch specification does not settle all those questions. Nor does this article claim to have independently measured long-term battery wear or repeated-session performance.
BYD has made the waiting time small enough to challenge a familiar assumption about electric cars. The next challenge is making that experience ordinary.
