The most persuasive advertisement for a home robot would be a boring evening: clean clothes put away, dishes handled, the house a little less chaotic, and nobody applauding a demonstration.
That is the appeal behind NEO, the humanoid robot from 1X. A machine shaped to move through rooms built for people could, in principle, tackle the jobs that specialised appliances leave behind.
The dream now has a price attached. As checked on 7 September 2026, 1X's ordering page lists US$20,000 for Early Access ownership and a US$499 monthly Standard subscription, with a refundable US$200 deposit. It says US deliveries start in 2026. Those are commercial offers and delivery statements, not evidence that large numbers of households already have a fully independent robot helper. 1X's ordering page.
“Can it do the chore?” leaves out an important word
That word is alone.
1X says NEO works autonomously by default. Its materials also say early owners receive basic or foundational autonomy. For unfamiliar or complex chores, owners can schedule a 1X expert to remotely supervise the robot's actions. NEO's product description.
Those statements can both be true. A robot may perform some tasks on its own while needing assistance with others. The meaningful question is which tasks fall into each group, how often help is required, and how the answer changes in a particular home.
Imagine asking a robot to put away towels. Picking up one folded towel is a task. Finding all the towels, avoiding the clothes beneath them, opening the correct cupboard and recovering when something slips is a much longer job.
For a household, completion matters more than a few impressive seconds.
Why a laundry basket is such a difficult test
The challenge becomes clearer if you mentally break down a chore you normally do without thinking. A sleeve can tangle around another garment. A cupboard may be left half open. Somebody can move the basket while you are elsewhere.
These everyday variations explain why a useful evaluation would repeat whole chores in changing conditions. A demonstration answers whether an action is possible under the conditions shown. A household product needs to answer whether it remains dependable when those conditions change.
This is also why a humanoid's appearance should not be mistaken for human common sense. Looking familiar makes the concept easier to imagine; it does not establish how well the system understands a room.

Teaching a robot to imagine what happens next
One part of 1X's research tackles that gap through a world model. In a January 2026 technical announcement, the company described a system that generates a possible visual sequence for a requested action, then uses another model to translate the sequence into robot movements.
In plain language: predict what completing the action should look like, then work out how to move towards it. The research uses video alongside robot-specific training data. 1X presents this as a route towards learning more varied skills. 1X's world-model explanation.
It is a compelling research direction. It is also a company's account of its system, not a guarantee that a customer can delegate any household chore today. A plausible imagined outcome still has to survive contact with real objects.
Remote help changes the product
Human assistance could make a robot useful before its autonomous capabilities are broad enough for every task. It also changes what ownership means.
A prospective owner would need clear answers about when assistance is used, what an expert can see, how access is authorised and what happens when help is unavailable. These are product questions arising from the assisted-operation model, not evidence of a particular privacy failure.
Manufacturing adds another test. In April 2026, 1X announced its Hayward, California factory and described plans to scale production. A factory announcement matters because a home robot needs repeatable hardware, servicing and replacement parts. The home-robot milestone worth watching is wonderfully unglamorous: how many complete chores get done, how reliably, with how little intervention?
When the answer becomes “most of them, most days”, a robot will stop being the most interesting object in the house. It will simply become useful.
